I bought six "one and a half inch red jewels about a week ago" and this morning I find a big round clutch of eggs being guarded by a pair of crazed "juvys" . Read profile here, but don't have time to research before I go to work. How long before they hatch and what will they need if successful hatch? Live brineshrimp? I have that for angelfish fry...I could use advice soon as this caught me unprepared,.thought I was buying immature fish. Help would be appreciated.

Hey Jim,

I don't have a clue about the gestation period. Just thought I'd 'confess' that I've been using frozen baby brine shrimp for my angel fry and they are doing well.
I also took a combination of Omega One flake foods and ground them into powder like consistency to augment with the brine shrimp.
Note: in the old days when I was breeding live bearers, I hatched a lot of brine shrimp...but it's just so easy to thaw frozen ones.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I have been wondering about your angelfish for what?-two weeks now! Please if you don't mind being a commercial ...what kind of frozen brineshrimp are you talking about? The baby ones, I would guess, but what brand? I would love to have some on hand when my timing is wrong or die off in heat.Private message if you don't want to say out loud. So glad your fish are doing well! Like I was whining about..my time is so constricted, I sometimes ask for info I know I can look for-but, I have to have time to hunt and peck. I still don't know gestation either, but she moved them while I was at work, so they may be "wigglers" now..can't get good look without her almost coming out of tank. Just lucky I saw them on way out last night..I'm told their 5 brothers and sisters wouldn't have fared well if I hadn't got them out. Good to hear from you.

The frozen baby brine shrimp I have is Hikari brand straight out of the freezer at Petsmart.

Petsmart is fifty miles away..I'll see if my local guy will get them for me! Update on little red jewels- Second couple paired off and I had to remove three out as #2 pair laid circle of eggs on piece of slate .Unbeleivable. Pretty sure these guys are H. Cristatus, old owner didn't know. They have black eyeballs, though. Pretty little guys. First clutch finally beginning to swim after 8 days...mom won't leave them alone.
