Plecos and Coconuts

Hello Everyone.

I was talking to a friend of my grandfather and he recomended getting a coconut and split it in half and the bristlenose will spawn in it. This sounds sensible enough. But he never sold me if i needed to do anything special to the coconut.

I might sound silly but i dont want to stick something straight into my tank, and kill of my fish.

Thanks for any relpys.

ive never put a coconut into any of my tanks but i would imagine after you crack it open you would have to obviously drain the milk and chip off the inside guts so it doesnt cloud your water.. i would then soak the coconut shell for about a week if not longer or boil it to get any tennins out of the wood like shell.. i am unsure of the shell naturally sinking on its own as well so you might have to weight it down..
i dont have experience in doing this, its just what i would do

Coconut shells have a ton of tannins in them, which will turn your water a tea color. It's not harmful to the fish but some people don't like the way it looks. Like onefish said, I would try to clean it up as much as possible then boil it for a bit. This will disinfect it, leech some of the tannins out and hopefully help it sink.

I don't know much at all about breeding plecos, though, so I really have no idea if that will work. Other forum members have successfully bred them before, so they might be able to help you more. Good luck!
