Lightbulb Platy breeding questions.

I have a few questions about breeding platys. Hopefully you guys might have some answers for me.

Currently I have 7 platys, 3 male and 4 female. I know, it's not really the correct mix. I trusted the pet store to correctly sex them, they however had no clue. I have since learned how to sex them correctly.

With that mix, I know they are spawning, I have actually watched it. I'm curious to know if the Red Wag male will spawn with the Sunburst or any other platy. As of now he seems especially attracted to the the female Red Wag.

While we're on the topic of pregnancy. I know its possible for the female to abort. When they do, do they discharge anything or is everything done internal? I beleive she was pregnant when I got her. Her belly was pretty big and it went down. Now she is poofing back up, hopefully conditions are ok for her to deliver.

In my expierience platy's will spawn with different varieties ,and in the absence of other platy's ,they will spawn with swordtails. Not sure about aborting internally, but have seen them discharge dead embryos and or fry if disturbed when the time is near or water conditions are not suitable. Most livebearers need slightly hard alkaline water with ph values between 7.4 and 8.0. Platys and swordtails seem to appreciate slightly cooler temps than mollies and guppies. I kept the platy's at 75 to 77 degrees F. When I thought the time was near I placed floating artificial (live is better) plants in the tank and the fry would gravitate to the plants and much less predation took place. They do seem to do well with algae or spirulina based flake foods that benefit both the adult fish and the fry as well. Might need to crush the flake to near powder for the fry for a couple weeks. I tried to feed the fry three to four small feedings per day. Hope some of this helps.

I think my water levels are pretty good right now. PH is around 7.5 maybe a little higher and water temp is around 75. I never saw anything floating after she got smaller, and now she has started to get bigger.

I have some tall plants (fake) that go from top to bottom of the tank and provide some hiding places. Hopefully everything will work out and she will drop some fry.

I'm really not sure how far a long she is, and tips on trying to figure that out?

Not with any degree of accuracy. The fish I had would either drop their fry at night ,or while I was away at work. Seemed the more I poked around the aquarium, the less likely they were to drop their fry. Being livebearer's I jst let em do what they do. I would then take the fry and trade em for store credit at the local fish store.

I've just recently gotten into platties, and I'm wondering about breeding them too. I got my first fish two days ago (Thank goodness they were all males!). How many babies do a female platy drop? And would the fry be able to fit through squares in a home made tank divider? (One made with needlepoint mesh)

they could but it will be a tight fit platy fry are pretty big.... as long as you have lots of places for the fry to hide the adult platties wont bother them to much
