I was just wondering which pet stores might take some platies, even if it's only for free. I live in ON, Canada, if that helps... would a PetSmart take them?

Also, do you just go in and ask if they'll take your fish, or what?

Thanks for any advice

You are most likely to have success selling / giving fish to a locally owned pet shop. Petsmart and such have national programs for specific fish and not much ability to buy locally. Find a locally owned store, ask for the owner and introduce yourself. You might make a new friend and find a resource for the future. Many in the fish breeding business started by being a salesperson and producing good fish. Note: Expect to only get .25 cents (US) or so for your Platys if that. Be sure you have large fish that you would be excited to buy. If they do not want to buy perhaps they will trade. Fish food for Platys is a good deal.

Get a paypal account if you do not already have one. paypal.com. That way if you are ripped off or the seller does not perform as promised then you can try to get a refund thru paypal. It is a very safe payment program to buy and sell fish online. On e bay it is the only thing they let people use these days I think.

Your paypal account is your e mail address. You link your paypal account to your credit card, debit card OR bank account. Then when you buy something paypal automatically takes the money from your account. When you sell something and someone pays YOU, then you accru money in your paypal account. You can leave it there and use it when you buy (so you do not have to use your bank account) or you can transfer it to your bank account. When you go to the paypal site check out "how paypal works". It explains it for new users. Hope that helps.

Just be realistic when selling your fish. The pet shop owner has costs of business. Rent, electric, payroll, taxes. Do not be upset when they only offer you .25 to .50 cents for your great fish. (Some easy to breed fish sell wholesale for .12 cents!) That offer is not an insult. It is what they pay. If you are asking then why am I paying three dollars and they are only offering .25 cents...see above...costs of doing business like rent, payroll, electric, bank loan, they need to make a profit to stay in business... etc.

Thanks so much for all the info! So, if I had approximately 40 fry... that's almost $5. XD Oh well. At least it would be a way to get rid of them without killing them/overcrowding the tank.

Is there a minimum age to use paypal?

I work at Petco, and I know that we take fish for adoption. You wouldn't be getting any money for them, but if you are having a population explosion we can help you out. At my store, we make sure all fish go to good homes too!

I know there are some Petcos in Canada, idk if there are any near your location though. See if you can find any near your area online! =)
