otocinclus babies AGAIN!!! yeah!!!

just happened to catch my otos spawning again, so i saved some of the leaves the eggs were on and, as far as i can tell, i will have around 12 babies!!! 3 of the eggs were not viable :( If all goes well, they will grow and live well with their brothers and sisters that were born last year. it's amazing watching these little ones grow. i was wondering, however, if anyone knows whether or not there would be any problem with inbreeding among fish?

I dont know about otos but I know about bettas, Im sure its about the same though. it is actually prefered to breed brothers and sisters to narrow out the preferred genes. Just dont let them imbreed for many generations because it can cause deformities.

Wonderful news! Could you share your tank information (temperature, pH, type of plants, etc) to encourage the rest of us?

I have two different species of Oto (not sure which though, I've searched for pictures and can't find any I can say for sure are what I have) in two seperate aquariums. One of mine is gravid and two (I'm assuming males) chase her around a lot, so I'm hopeful. I look at the plant leaves everyday to search for eggs, but nothing yet.

my tank is pictured under freshwater aquariums....it's a 75 gallon planted. the temp is 78, the plants i have are amazon sword/crypt/glossostigma/java fern/ narrow leaf sag subulata and broad leaf sword. i haven't measured the ph in years. i could get a kit and test it if you'd like. my breeding net got knocked down and i can only count 7 babies, but all are doing well so far. i was wondering what other fish you have in your tank crazyplantlady? my betta will follow the ottos around and eat the eggs as soon as he can. and i don't know if this helps at all or not, but it seems as though any time i do a water change (or the seasons change, crazy as that sounds) and the temp of the water is a bit cooler is usually when spawning occurs. good luck with your ottos! the babies are by far my favorite!

The only thing in their aquariums are rasbora fry. I don't think they could eat the eggs, they are still chasing microworms!
