Kribensis Breeding??

Hi! My Krib breeding has been going swell, but no babies yet. Over the last 7 days and after a month of foreplay, my kribs dug out holes inside my upside down flower pot. Then the female stayed inside with just her nose showing while the male chased others from anywhere around the pot. But the last couple of days both Kribs have been roaming the tank, seemingly unconcerned with the pot. The mom goes back in every few minutes, but for 3-4 days straight she NEVER left the pot vicinity.

Does this make any sense? Are the eggs still in there?

Thanks.

Turn off the tank lights and use a small flashlight to peek into the pot. You should be able to see the eggs without disturbingth female too much. one questio, is she driving off the male when he approaches? This is protective behavior and she could be protecting her clutch.

Unfortunately I cut the hole in the pot too small to see in real well. Especially since I read that the eggs are usually up on top.

The parents are getting along just fine.

I guess I'll just wait.

ugh. Finally lifted the cave and looked. Nothing. This makes zero sense. Time to start over I guess. They did everything they were supposed to - but no eggs. UGH!

WHAT THE?!?!?

And now several weeks later I am vacuuming the tank and for some reason the Kribs won't get out of the way of some "gunk" on the bottom. A closer look? 15 little babies! Unreal. When you stop trying, it happens. Sort of like humans I guess? [/u]

Well, it's fortunate kribs are very responsible in defending their fry.

Ain't that the truth?? I got a male and a female on the LFS girl's recommendation - she said they would adapt and socialize better as a pair. Well that much may be true, but I didn't know what I would do with the kids if they decided to raise a family, and I told her as much. She assured me that it was very difficult to find a pair that would bond, and then they needed some pretty specific tank conditions, and how even experienced breeders often had trouble.... BALONEY! Yeah, i know that now. This is the second time I've had to move all of my cichlids into another tank because my psycho-protective kribs are trying to kill everyone. Lol!

Anyway, gratz on the munchkin-fish and good luck!

I don't mean to sidetrack the thread, but is this typical for Jack Dempseys as well? I've got two that are getting pretty snuggly, and they could inflict some real damage if they went super-parent on me...

Also, (back to the kribs) I seem to have gone from what looked like a cloud of over 40 fry to maybe 20 or so. I don't see any bodies in the pre-filter. Are mom and dad snacking? Or was leaving the 5" pleco in there a mistake? I'm definitely losing a few little guys here and there, I'm just trying to figure out where.
