I always do my aquarium water changes once a week. However, yesterday when I was about to do the weekly water change I noticed my jewel cichlids had a bunch of fry at the bottom of the tank. The mother and father are being very protective over them and making sure the other fish stay away from them. I have never had fry before and am wondering is it okay to leave them in the tank with their parents? Also, I did not do my regular water change because I didnt want to disturb the parents and their fry. My other question is will it be okay to do my water change as usual or will that disturb the parents and will they end up eating the fry or should it be okay? Any advice will be helpful, as I wanna do whats best for the parents and their babies. Thanks:)

As far as disturbing the parents.. yes, that can happen. In fact I have a pair that did just that 10 days ago.I tried to get some fry out to give to a friend and they went schitzoid, ending up with about a third left a couple days later. Another pair..don't seem near as bothered. Red jewel fry are pretty strong although pretty small(especially with young, first time parents), so if the parents are healthy, your babies are. Or pretty much..Until you see how they act, just keep tank healthy and don't stress your fish. Wait till you see how fast they grow! http://jimbosstuff.shutterfly.com

Questions, what size tank, how is it decorated and what else lives there besides the Jewels? What do you plan to feed the fry???

Good luck with the fry. My Convicts are crazy protective of the fry. They are used to me intruding to do particial water changes but attack relentlessly.

Cichlid Fry

My tank is a 55 gallon and besides the jewels, I have three silver dollars in the tank. The tank is decorated
with lots of plants and caves, cichlid stones, and other hiding places. Unfortunately, when I woke up the other day, all of the fry were gone, I looked everywhere and cannot find them so Im guessing the parents ate them:( Not sure why they would do that since they was taking turns protecting them from the other fish. I was gonna feed the fry Hikari Tropical First Bites. Maybe next time I should take them out?
