My 1/2 black red, Big Bertha, dropped 3 fry about a month ago. I had placed her in a birthing tank, and after 3 days, thats all she dropped, so I put her back into her display tank. On Friday, she looked like she was getting close to dropping again, so I put her into a breeder box in her display tank. This morning she started dropping, and continued all day. Her tank is in my office, so I got to see her drop a couple of times.
She dropped around 40-50 fry total, but only about 20 lived. The rest died right on the bottom of the breeder. Some never opened from their "ball drop" stage. Others opened up, but died before they could get to the free-swimming stage. On a couple of the drops, I noticed the fry did not open up right away. It took 20-30 minutes for them to open up. All of the dead quickly turned white, and some were covered with a white fungus?, growth? right away. I need to mention that I had a little bit of uneaten food on the bottom of the breeder box, so bacteria from that could have had a harmful effect.
I fed them frozen baby brine shrimp about 20 minutes ago. As I write this, more than half of them are up above the grid in the bottom of the breeder, fair game for Bertha to eat them. But she doesn't seem to be bothering them.
In the mean time, at about 4:30, I was on the phone to a customer and glanced into my other display tank. One of the girls there decided today was a good time to drop. I ended up fishing 15 fry out of that tank. Who knows how many others became a late-day snack.
All in all a good day on the Guppy Puppy Ranch. I'll keep the best looking of each sex, and see what I can breed from them. The rest will be given away, or traded to the LFS for credit.
