I may have messed up!
Ok so I had 3 sunburst platies in a 10gal tank do to being preggy. One of them stopped looking so pregnant so I put it back into the 29gal tank (this was about 2 weeks ago) and today I saw a baby in the 10gal. I forgot that platies are livebearers! I took the two females out thinking the eggs had hatched and they ate the other, I then remember that they give birth to live fry! So I had to catch them again and put them back into the 10gal. I know it put a lot of stress on them. I just can't stand to see the babies eaten. I then found a second baby and found that they can hide without the females getting to them. How long will they be giving birth for? Once they are done I'd like to put them back into the 29gal and get them away from the fry. I also took the filter out so the babies don't get eaten up by that lol. I'll change half or so of the water and put new water in. How long will it be until I can put them into the 29gal? Also how long will she be giving birth for?
Tank Set up
3 Zebra Danio's
3 Black finned Tetra's
4 Sunburst Platies
2 dwarf Gourami fish
2 fancy female guppies
2 red eared slider turtles
I would think four weeks, maybe five, and the babies should be large enough to fend for themselves. You can help their survival rate by creating places for them to hide. I used to use artificial bushy or grassy type plants and stick them in a corner of the aquarium towards the bottom. The little ones will use these areas to hide in until they are large enough that the parents won't view them as food. You can also purchase a sponge to fit over the uptake of your filter or a section of panty hose to help keep the babies from being sucked into it. Babies need filter running. It provides oxygen as well as filtering out debri. Don't feed the babies too much or ammonia levels could rise to harmful levels. I have seen platys and mollies give birth in an hour and others took up to two days. Best to leave them be once they begin giving birth or theycould abort.
The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.
