female guppies can hold sperm for a period of time, this means it will give birth, be pregnant all over again ( without a male present )
the way to tell you have a pregnant guppy besides it being "plump" is to look for a black gravid spot by its anal fin, which will get larger and darker as its pregnancy continues.
keeping adult fish with fry will cause some to get eaten, so if you want them to have a greater chance of survival i suggest removing the fry and putting into a seperate tank, if a seperate tank isnt available provide as many hiding spots as possible ( plants,rocks, ect. ect. ) I personally allow some fry to get eaten (sounds mean but its life) just to keep my population lower and it provides a nutritous free meal as well as darwins theory of the strong survive.
