are there any signs to tell the livebearer is about to give birth? the only reason i managed to save my guppy fry was cos i noted the date of her previous birth and seperated her just in time, there was no obvious signs??

Hiding among plants and caves is usually one of the signs. The other one I know is the lack of appetite. That's as far as I had seen in my experience. The belly will also look like it is ready to burst. In some cases, some lfemale livebearers have black spot seen within them. The darker the spot near their anus is, this would mean that releasing of fry is getting near.
IMO, there's no need to try saving the fry. Livebearers are so prolific and with plants provided, you are guaranteed to have the strongest fry surviving whereas isolating the mother would mean struggling over trying to prevent all the fry from succumbing to illnesses and other factors that will easily harm and kill them.:)

last time i had fry in the tank(2 lots) only 1 survived this is cos i saved her and seperated her. we had 2 in there for a while then they disappeared. i do not wish to save all fry as it woud b too much!! all of my females have the gravid spot and all r dark. i have heard that sometimes it can turn reddish in colour b4 birth, is this correct? tho mollies dont necessarily have a gravid spot is this also correct?? my 3 guppies do tho and my big molly does. i really would love to save some mollies as i think they r lovely so perhaps ill place more plants in tank and c ow it goes.

In my experience, the gravid spot sometimes turned red. Not that red though.:) I have observed this with guppies. I was disappointed to myself when I kept about 150 guppies in a 75 gallons before.:shake: Now I avoid them because they can't stop reproducing.
As for the gravid spots, mollies do not have the transparency of their bodies like guppies do so you can't see the gravid spot but mollies do have gravid spots.:)
