Fry tank and snails

I have been trying to breed german blue rams for a few months now, and I can get a batch of eggs to hatch at a pretty reasonable size now. However, the fry will usually survive a week before they start to die off, usually at or when I do a water change. I have read pros and cons to putting snails into a tank with fish eggs. Would they eat the eggs or would they help keep the tank and water clean? Also, how would a water change be recommended, as I used atleast 1-2 day aged water for the switch in the fry tank, just cant keep the little guys alive. This is like two questions in one, sorry for any confusion.

How big is your tank with the Rams?
How often do you do a water change and how much water?

I have snails in my tank with breeding cichlids, and it's not bad. They eat a few eggs, but lay their own also. I'd rather have a snail problem though, I don't have much extra room for more fry.

I move the ram eggs into a 5 gallon bare tank, with a heater mounted on the side. I keep an airstone right next to the eggs. Thats all. I keep the rams in another tank with 2 otos for breeding, which they spawn every week to 2 weeks. But I have never seen the eggs hatch with the parents, which is why I move them into the 5 gallon. The tank water in the 5 gallon gets dirty fairly quick once they hatch, I try to do a water change once I see them free swimming so I can clean the bottom, but usually once I do that, they begin to die off.
