firemouth or convict 10 gal

i have a 10 gallon. i was wondering if i could use it to breed firemouths or convicts. i have 2 2.5 inch male and female firemouths right now in a 30 gal but so far nothing has happened. i've read that a smaller aquarium might help.
if the 10 gallon is a bad idea for both fire mouths and convicts, then please give me some pointers on the 30. right now i have a school of 4 tiger barbs as dither fish. the water temp is about 78 F. i have two flower pots in opposite sides of the tank. the bottom is cut out on one. i have recently started feeding them tropical flakes, frozen and freeze dired blood worm, and floating cichlid pellets. any suggestions?

Are you certain they are male and female? They may be a little young at two inches. If they are male and female then patience is all that is needed. Are they new to your aquarium? Some fish can take a month or more to get comfortable in the aquarium. Just be sure and maintain the water quality and nature will do the rest.

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.

yes, i am fairly positive that they are male and female. they've beent in the tank for almost a month. their behaviuor is that they male (who is larger) has claimed a flowerpot and won't let anyone inside. sometimes he will chase the female around nipping at her fins/sides, but when i look she's not missing any scales or fins. she pretty much tries to ignore him.

Even if you've got both sexes you might need to give it time. I have two kribensis cichlids that initially got along very well. The male then spent some time being completely intolerant of the female. It wasn't after the pair were in the tank for 2-3 months that they started showing breeding behavior.

Convicts breed very well in 10 gallons just as long as you remove the male after the fry have hatched to keep the mess down, and to keep him from eating them.Firemouths are a tiny bit more difficult to breed.Mine bred in a 10 gallon, but it needed water changes ever 5 days.

80 Gallon--One 12" Albino Tiger Oscar(Whitey),One 11" Common Tiger Oscar (MC-THE OSCAR),One 5" Male Convict(TURNBUCKLE),Three 4" Male Convicts(STATE,MR.DESTRUCTO,ADREI),One 13" Pleco(RILO)

20 Gallon--One 4" Female Convict (Sparky),One 2" Female Convict(WRIGLEY),One 6" Pleco(BEAVIS)

10 Gallon--One 4" Female Convict(COUNTY),One 5" Albino Pleco(SUCKER),One 1" Female Convict(PHEEBE)
