escape artist fry, I am at wit's end

Okay, Beside my abnormal behaving fish, I'm ready to scream.

Today is my day off and finally made it to town (45 minutes away) to get a breeder unit. I bought one of the small rigid plastic ones with the little v trough. I figured this would do because I don't want to breed fish but I am an opportunist and thought I would go ahead and try to raise 3 or 4 fry and see what happens.

I took everything out of the breeder and preceeded to catch the 2 that survived the filter over night (I had 5 left last night). I took a Bathroom Dixie cup (I was afraid to use the turkey baster because their eyes and stripe are not reflecting yet) and caught them and placed them in the breeder. I bent over to put the cup on the floor and one was gone! I checked the cup to make sure he didn't stick and during this time the second escaped! Sorry venting a bit.

They are now swimming around the outside of the breeder laughing at me(if only fish could laugh). Now what? I didn't realize they would be able to escape through the slits..

Are the breeders with the netting better? I took one out of the box in the store and the holes looked like the fry would be able to get through them. Any suggestions?

Seems you'll need another tank, Sadie.:) A 5 gallons tank for raising fry will do the job. Just get a sponge filter and make it bare-bottom so you can clean and maintain the tank easily. This will allow the fry to grow faster too.

Good luck.:)

Thanks, I was afraid of that. I guess I need to decide how serious I am, I know it's a small investment but I'm not sure I want to deal with it. I'll think on it, I can't get back to town until next Monday anyhow. I just got them rangled again and they've stayed contained for a whole 5 minutes. I guess I will put the floating plants back in. I may decide just to let nature take its course.

I've always found it easier to just move them to a new tank than to try to use the breeding traps...unless you just wanted to let them try to rough it out on their own. I have a ton of plants in my plant tank along with a small population of guppies to use the fry as feeders. The parents dont get many of them and I miss quite a few as well in the plant cover. I've had fry make it in a regular tank too so ya never know. As another testament to their survival skills I had one fry make it for the better part of a week in a bare tank with young angelfish...given cover and less fry-hungry tankmates he probably would have grown up just fine. Depends on how many of em you want to keep...a lot more will make it in their own tank than will in a community setting.

Get a net breeder. I used the V-traps for a long time and I have since swotched and it is much more comfortbale for the mother and the fry have a lot more room to roam. The net also allows for the other fish to come up and suck out the extra food left over from the fry. If you want to modify it, go get some plastic canvas and cut it so that it fits right over the rods. I mad mine using two net breeders and cut the other one but you can do it with just the plactic canvas. Either that or get one of those egg or globe type plastic canvas so the fry can swim in it and the mother can't get to them.
