Cleaning fry tank

Well I moved my Bolivian Ram fry to what has turned into the nursery tank. To get the fry out I originally tried to suck them up with my gravel vac. That in turn has brought over crud from the bottom of my planted bolivian tank.

How do I clean this crud out when I have these tiny fish swimming around or how do you all go about cleaning the fry tank? Do u use a syphon? A cup? whats your process as I read u have to do this daily.

How much water should i remove daily (10 gallon)?

Also - is it adviseable to put aquarium salt in the fry tank?

Clean the bottom crud with a turkey baster

Use a cup to empty and fill water (so you don't siphon one up)

And fry are really sensitive to water parameter changes so I would aim no more then 10% daily mabye a little less until they get to be about a month old.

Nope. If they live I would keep 2 and sell the rest off to my LFS.

At this stage of the game Im still geeked that they had eggs, hatched and are alive in another tank.

I have never had any baby fish outside of livebearers when I was a kid so this is all a new experience to me.

I use air line tubing for a siphon that way you can better keep from sucking up babies.

I've been curious about this myself. Would it work to fashion a sponge on the end of a siphon? Anyone tried that?

I just use a siphon and if any end up in the bucket, I get them out with a turkey baster :)

The problem with using a sponge on your siphon is then you don't get any crud out of the tank.

The air line tubing is way faster than the turkey baster though. I started this because if you have sensitive fry it's much easier on them I also put a bucket above the tank and use the air line tube to put water back into the tank to prevent current. This is also going to depend on the type of fry wither or not you have to take all these precautions. With Guppy fry I do major water changes 50% a few times a week, I'm working with rainbow fish now they do not like major water changes I don't touch there tank for the first 4 weeks then I'm only doing 10% changes and I'm still nervous I haven't got them mastered yet.

How often will depend on how many fry you have in the 10g.
