I have been overseas for about 10 weeks and because I didn't have anyone to look after my freshwater tropical fish I decided to take them back to the fish shop and turn off my aquarium. When I returned 3 months later, I found at least two cherry barbs, just large enough to be able to specify their species, swimming around the tank. There has been nothing to eat, except perhaps small amounts of algae that the snails have been beaten to. The lights have been off, but a patch of java moss has survived. The tank is about 20 degrees celsius and probably hasn't dropped below that. The water parameters are fine. I have another tank that I could transfer the cherry barbs to - I am worried about putting crushed fish flakes into the system without a functioning filter. If they have survived thus far, should i leave them to it until they are large enough to avoid being sucked into a filter, or should i transfer them and start anew?
