Can Plecos interbreed?

Hello,

I have a 100L home aquarium tank at home in which I had a small Golden Pleco. I recently re-homed 2 other Plecos from 2 different friends, a bristle nose plec and a common plec. All 3 plecs have lived alone in small aquariums for more than 18 months. I have just done my weekly water change and discovered a baby Pleco!!! I have not added any other fish other than the few I re-homed. I have no knowledge about breeding fish (apart from Plattys) and have done nothing other than to care for my fish in the usual way. I have good live plants, regular water change and high quality food.

Can anyone confirm they have also had different species of Plec inter-breed before?

Many thanks in advance.

I'm thinking that golden pleco is simply an albino version of the BN or common and not really it's own species.

As a matter of fact, I joined this site today to ask the VERY SAME question. I was handed down a 30 gallon with 2 plecos of diff. species. 1 being a common salfin, and another being a Bristlenose (sailfin, I think). The bristlenose looks extremely different from any pleco I've seen, not like the pictures of Bristlenoses I've seen online. This one isn't long and skinny or bottom-swimming like the plecos I know of. This one is rather fatter and swims at all levels, but still bottom feeds. When I was given the tank I was told there was a baby pleco in there and he had no idea how it got there. I haven't been able to distinguish which one is the male and the female, but the baby is suckermouth like the sailfin, and has the color and spots of the bristlenose. Very odd and I was curious if this could even happen, and wondering when mating season is for plecos? They haven't paid any attention to each other for the duration I've had the tank, but today the Bristlenose was very aggressive toward the suckermouth, chasing it.

If the bristlenose doesn't look like other pictures of bristlenose pleco... it probably isn't one. Again.. they probably are in fact the same species.

What would it be then?

I have a picture but I'm unsure how to post it here :/

Btw, I know that my plecos are the same species; I'm just trying to figure out what type of pleco this is.

Checkout LO14 Scobinancistrus aureatus (goldie Pleco).

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.

looks like a syno catfish

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile,
a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment,
or the smallest act of caring,
all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
