Welcome to Fishforum.com, James.

You will need a tank full of plants rather than those breeding traps which are too stressful for the gravid fish. All well-known livebearers are capable of producing several batches of fry so the bigger question comes to mind: what are you going to do with the fry as they grow? If you obtained the females from the shops, chances are they are already gravid so whatever the resulting fry is (depending on whcih gene was dominant or recessive), you'll never know.

If you want to develop pure strains, males and females should always be separated the moment you are able to distinguish them properly. There are two factors this method will avoid: 1. inbreeding-a lot of resulting fry are often poorer in quality, and 2. strain control-you are able to control the strains preventing a lot of horrible combinations you don't want. This method can be done only if you have several tanks in store.
