Bigger fish not eating fry...regulation options?
I have a 55 gallon tank with a red tail shark, albino algae eater, 7 neon tetra, and a crap ton of platy and mollie adults and babies. I was told that the fry would be eaten by the other fish if they weren't separated but mine are flourishing. There are about 30 growing babies. Are there other fish I can get that will take care of the fry and not mess with the adult mollies and platys? Want to find a way to regulate them without having to separate the males and females. Any insight?
I read once that a Gourami, one of the larger species, (you will need to read all their profiles), would do the trick. However in the same thread, read another post of someone's experience that they tried this method only to find the chosen Gourami became like a "nanny" fish to have all the fry follow it around the tank. haha I understand generally only one Gourami to a tank as most LFS tend to stock only males (esp the dwarf species) as they are the colourful ones and 2 males will create aggression in the tank. However I don't know about a Red Tail Shark with a Gourami....I am not an expert, so do your research. Hopefully others will chime in here.
Sounds like you feed your fish well and the fry are crafty and healthy. I'd take them to a pet shop and give them away. lol It's kinda a waste to just breed fish if you don't want the babies. There is no sure-fire way to get something that will eat your fry and not mess with the other fish...though I hear some frogs will eat them, you still probably wont get rid of them all since you have some obviously good ones. Just give them away. =) Or you could find a place that will buy them, but if you're just gonna kill them off, why not catch them and adopt them out to a pet shop for free? Most LFS's will take fry off your hands, some will even pay.
Turning on the Aquarium lamp in the morning is MY cup of coffee.
