Question to add to this discussion. I have a 10 gallon badis tank and a 10 gallon shrimp tank. Can I buy a piece of sponge and just put it over the intake of my HOB? Also what kind of sponge would I buy? Thanks.

No holes in the UGF tubes, will never get enough circulation through to the gravel. Layered filtration is best done in the HOB or canister. Ac makes a great HOB with large chambers for lots of options for filtration. I haven't used others so there could be some that have as much space to layer in.

Sponge on intake of HOB is hit and miss, depending on the model you have to make sure that the sponge is narrow enough to let adequate flow.
