I have a 29 gal tank that will end up having tiger barbs (currently have 9, subject to change) and some cories. is there another kind of fish that i could put in the tank with them, or should i just get more tiger barbs and leave it at that?
No other upper water fish. More Tigers perhaps, but if the 9 are getting along, I wouldn't rock their boat.
Take a look at the article I linked in another thread on aggression is small spaces and you'll see why. To the fish, the aquarium is a small space, given they will attain 2 to 2.5 inches.
The substrate fish should be OK, though corys do sometimes swim mid-water so keep a watch out. Some of the "odd" catfish that are small would work well, say a Whiptail Catfish or related fish.
I have 3 tiger barbs in mine along with a red tail bala shark, pleko and 2 tetras, 1 crawdad and 2 map turtles... they all get along just fine!
