I had 3 tiger barbs in my tank for about a few years with no fin nipping problems whatsoever. Recently, 2 of the tiger barbs have died and the the one that is left is terrorizing the other fish. If I got a few more tiger barbs to school with the one that I have would it stop the fin nipping problem even though the one I have is probably much older.
If you have the room, I would add some more tiger barbs. Keeping them in numbers, does cut down on aggression problems. It should be fine to add the younger ones, but I would try to buy the largest ones possible.
I also have a red tail shark, a gourami, an upside down catfish, a synondontis catfish, and 3 black skirt tetras (the main victims of the tiger barbs).
