Strange behavior or not???
I have 3 zebra danios in a 5 gallon hex, which has been cycling now for 4 weeks. I recently added a 6 inch bubbler and either they love it or they are afraid of it. Anyway, 2 of my fish hang out at the top of the tank near the bubbler and the filter and act as though they are swimming against the current created. The other fish is the bully, she hangs out near the bottom of the tank and if the others come out, she chases them back. I don't know if the other 2 fish are okay back there, ya know, maybe they like to swim in the current or if they are just trying not to be bullied by the other fish? Any suggestions or comments?
I really don't understand these little fish. I turned off the airstone and now they are all peacefully schooled together. I see now that I have 2 pregnant females and 1 male. They occasionally still chase each other but nothing like the behavior I have witnessed for the past 29 days! Gosh I hope I haven't traumatized them with putting in that airstone. I am gonna leave it turned off now. I'll keep a close eye on them to make sure that they are ok. Any suggestions are still most welcome on this issue of my crazy danios!
My danios usually only form a tight school when they're stressed. This happens if they're moved or if I'm messing around with the tank, like doing a gravel vac or rearranging the decor. Once they've had time to settle in, they don't stick tightly together and instead spend their time playing tag with one another. Turning off the airstone might have caused enough environmental change to stress them a bit, causing them to school. They'll probably go back to their normal odd behavior after a day or two. So, it's probably better to leave the air stone on as they'll appreciate the water movement.
