SE Asian cyprinids: tannins and blackwater

A few years ago I saw a spectacular display of Bala sharks (Balantiocheiolos melanopterus) in an aquarium with dark gravel and exquisite pieces of bogwood as the overbearing decor. Of course, these leached tannins into the water and darkened it.
The Balas seemed healthy in it, and certainly were accentuated by the setting. However, is this actually wise? As well as using blackwater extract for SE Asian cyprinids. They always appear to do well in clear, soft water closer to neutral. i have heard it said that a few rasboras enjoy peat in the water too, though this is not as universal a solution as blackwater is for Characins.

The fish will inherit the earth.

Tannins in the water will have no ill effect on the fish.............In the wild some of these fish will live their entire lives in tannin stained water

I was just wondering if bala sharks specifically live in tannin-stained water in the wild (though they no longer do live in the wild :( ), as I could see that they were quite healthy in it.
