SE Asian cyprinids: tannins and blackwater
A few years ago I saw a spectacular display of Bala sharks (Balantiocheiolos melanopterus) in an aquarium with dark gravel and exquisite pieces of bogwood as the overbearing decor. Of course, these leached tannins into the water and darkened it.
The Balas seemed healthy in it, and certainly were accentuated by the setting. However, is this actually wise? As well as using blackwater extract for SE Asian cyprinids. They always appear to do well in clear, soft water closer to neutral. i have heard it said that a few rasboras enjoy peat in the water too, though this is not as universal a solution as blackwater is for Characins.
