Post Problems with Kuhli Loaches

I don't know why, but I've been having trouble keeping a school of Kuhli Loaches alive in a 20g tank. Twice I've ordered a batch of them, and both times, I end up down to one, which is the one I've had from the first batch. Happened to me once last year, but that time, I thought they were all gone, and it wasn't until that batch showed up, that I've found out that one was hiding out in one of the decorations. Unfortunately, they all died, along with the rest of the fish when the local water became more of a hazard to the rest of the fish. When I finally got it fixed, one of the fish I order are Kuhli loaches, and except for one, picked up some strange illness and died, leaving me with the one I've previously mentioned. By next month, I've ordered a new batch because I know how they love being in a group, but for some reason, it was like one day they are healthy, the next they were dead, and once again I'm down to one. The difference is that this batch was healthy. Wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong or if the company I've ordered them from, LiveAquaria, kept sending me a bad batch.
Anyway, the water parameters are these: The temp. I keep at 75, the ph I keep at neutral, at around 7.0. The other parameters, I'm not too sure about, but consider that all the other fish are still alive and well, they must be in the right levels. I have live plants, a driftwood and a decoration that serves as good hiding places, but sometimes it's hard to tell which ones they use the most.
So right now I'm asking anybody if they know if the Kuhli Loaches have high standards, if any of the parameters are within okay levels for them, or something, because while they tend to scare me a bit when I see them looking like they died, I still would like to see if I can get something right.

Don't take this the wrong way, but maybe you shouldn't be keeping kuhli loaches. It would seem as though they do not agree with your tank. Whether its limited to just the water or not, I don't know. But not everyone can keep every fish - it's common for people to have a particular fish that they just can't keep alive.

What do you have for substrate?

Maybe someone else has an idea.

regular, pebble size gravel. the kind you can find in any Walmart. The problem is, I still have one that is alive and well, and what I don't get is why is it the only one unless he is a carrier of something that only Kuhli Loaches can catch, but immune to. I still have places for them to hangout during the day, since I know they are supposed nocturnal, but the problem is how unpredictable they can be at times.

Loaches can disappear for periods of time. Truth be told I have no idea how many kuhli loaches I have - I don't know how anyone can count them and be sure to not count the same one multiple times.

because of the fact that the last order, I've placed 5 kuhli loaches into the tank, and one by one, day by day, I've found 5 kuhli loaches that are as stiff as a twig, and don't move an inch to avoid the net, meaning that they were really dead. Plus I have driftwood and what looks like either the front of a castle or a town on a cliff, with a hole on the bottom that acts like cave, and those are pretty much the only places that I would find them when it is time to clean the tank. And since I have live plants in the tank, chances are, their borrowing might effect the roots. Although I don't always get a full count, I do always seem to find the dead ones better, and I wish it was easier to find the live ones and keep them alive.
