What would live happily in a 29 gal tank with a ruby shark? I am wanting a small number of larger fish. Not HUGE but a similar size to him. It is a planted (not heavily) tank. Posted via Mobile Device
Well Rubys, or Rainbows as they're more commonly known can get to be fairly good sized fish. They'll reach about 6" when full grown. A 29 gallon tank is about the smallest tank you can put one of these fish in. They're territorial bottom dwellers so expect your shark to claim the entire bottom of the tank as his/her own. I'd strongly suggest against picking any other bottom dwellers for your tank.
As for picking another fish of equal size, that's a hard. Most fish that size tend to not appreciate your size tank (Dennison Barbs), be quite pricey (cockatoo chiclids), or not suitable for keeping in smaller numbers (any other cichlid).
Personally I'd look at some smaller fish and let your shark rule their roost.
Ok thank you for the detailed reply!
