Do you think this could work?

Hi there
I had a curious question. Wont kill me if it wont work, but would be awsome if it could.
I was wondering if a school of 5-6 green tiger barbs could live with my community fish. My tank has 12 black neon tetras, 1 dwarf gourami, 1 pictus, 1 peppered cat and one dojo loach, and my future tank mates include 12 cardinal tetras 4 kili loaches and 3 juli corys.
Could it work?
My tank is a 29 gallon.

hi
i don't know about the stock side of things, however i think
the only thing i would be concerned about would be your gourami.
tiger barbs are known for their agression, and when they turn, they turn fast !

The gourami may get picked on, and the neons will surely begin to disappear...probably not a good idea. They are very cool fish though. The bottom feeders should be okay, but thats just based on my experience. My school of five are always interacting with one another and are growing fast, plus their green is looking greener than before. Fun fish to watch, and feed (theyre like shark!)

my bad, my eyes skipped over the "black" in "black neons", lol... those should be okay especially in the size school you have, but I would keep an eye on the gourami if you add the barbs, but i wouldnt include cardinals in the future if you get tigers...and if you get the tigers would make sure they are well fed, im thinking it might work, im just iffy about that gourami

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, it was just curiou, and like I said i wouldnt be overly dissapointed if it didnt work anyways =]
Im just trying to figure out a stock list that would be unique... Ive been thinking of a Blue Ram, but I dont think I have enough experiance for them... I really dont know what to put in my tank

Is your peppered cat a peppered cory? I would increase the school size if it is, and maybe get a single dwarf cichlid. Rams, kribensis, nannacara, apistogramma - any of those should work. You'd end up with a pretty heavily stocked tank though, so I'm not sure about adding the extra loaches and the other type of cory.

Also: your dojo loach is a coldwater fish, so it should really be in an unheated tank rather than a tropical one.

I find hes doing better in my heated tank then when he was in a cold water tank, hes much happier now then before.
Yes, my peppered cat is a cory, and I was thinking about increasing his school size, but I want to get Julies so Im thinking of re homing him.
I think a blue ram would be cool, and they were reccommended to me before, so if I held off on the other loaches and the barbs, would the other stocking be okay?

I don't see why not. The only compatibility issue I can imagine would be between any dwarf cichlid and your gourami. I used to have dwarf gouramis and kribensis cichlids in the same tank, and the female krib would sometimes get into scraps with one of the gouramis. Nothing too serious and there were enough hiding places for everyone to be happy so it worked out fine.

Ah Okay.
Well, Ive decided to put up my Cory, Pictus and Dojo for sale, so hopefully I can find them a new home.
Ive decided against the Blue Ram because I dont want him and my Grouami to get into fights, just in case. But, I am going to the city today, and i might be picking up some new fishes.

Ive also put on hold a ten gallon tank with accessories, and the owner of it breeds red jewel cichlids I believe is what he said, and he said he would give me a few for no extra cost.

Any information on them?

What I want to know is why you are going to have three species of mid-level shoaling fish in that small of a tank. It would look much nicer and less chaotic if you did like 18 Cardinals or the like. But, its your tank. It is still overstocked with having 12 of each tetra IMO.

Jewels are mean mean mean. Not for community tanks at all. Even though they max out at 4" (maybe 5) they're aggressive enough to keep with American cichlids much larger than themselves. They'll tear up your community like nobody's business.

There's no guarantee that a ram (or any other dwarf cichlid) will absolutely get into fights with a gourami, it's just a possibility. My male krib never paid my gouramis any attention; it was just the female that didn't like them.
