Comet Goldfish

At what size do comet goldfish become mature enough to breed? I'm just wondering as most comet goldfish you get in pet stores are only 2-3 inches long and these fish can get up to 12 inches given the right food and living conditions.

You've got me stumped on that one. Perhaps PM member Lupin and have him take a look at this thread? He knows his goldfish.

They should be sexually matured by at least a year or two. It's usually the age that comes, not the size and most goldfish are often stunted that even at a year or more of age, they show capability to breed but the resulting fry will not be at their best, most likely stunted as well.

Thanks. So getting a comet from the store I work at (Petsmart) would probably result in the fish being stunted? And how much water does a comet need? I'm far off from getting a pond but I always like to plan for when I finally do get a house hubby has already said we can have a pond.

it's harder to control the conditions in a pond then in an aquarium.so do research before you buy as to save what you love ;)
