You can put a couple of cherry barbs in a 5 or a 10 gallon tank, but they won't be happy. Particularly if there's more than one male. I have 2 males and 6 females in a 55, and it's amazing how one male will chase the other at a sprint the entire length of the tank at high speed and then get chased back when he enters he other's territory. Just for swimming space, I'd make sure the tank were 30 inches or more on the long dimension - a 20 long is the minimum I would use for a happy cherry barb.
Also, remember, cherry barbs don't school. They enjoy having other cherry barbs in the tank, but they don't need them, so you can put just one in a tank. Of course, with no conspecifics to chase around and not a lot of swimming room, you could end up with a case of fatbastarditis.
