I'm going back and forth on getting some of these- due to their minute size- I think my tank is tolerable/fine for the 6 or 9 I could maybe get away with as minimum. The real question is do I want the tank that planted? I would add one more plant- maybe java fern- my other plants are growing well and I need to allow for there continued growth- max. size of the cpd's @.75 " seems doable in my tank- much for me to think about- Thanks all for info.!

I agree with Mina, but as you have this tank and some fish, in this instance I would work with that, and I think we can make it work. The smaller group with lots of plants is the way to go.

I would get all the fish at one time. This avoids the first fish establishing their space and hounding any subsequent arrivals.

As for plants, fast growing are key, and floating. Water Sprite if you can get it as a floater, cover the top (it soon will). Pygmy chain sword for the substrate. Crypts are not as fast growing, and can be fussy, but they are an option, as it Java Fern and Anubias. A stem plant or two, maybe Brazilian Pennywort (tolerates moderate light) and maybe even Cabomba.

Ok I'll see if I can get the pygmy chain sword at the lfs- they seem to have a fairly good supply of plants. This is what I already have:
Anacharis narrow Leaf, BANANA PLANT ( Nymphoides aquatica) , WATER SPRITE( Ceratopteris thalictroides)
And thanks very much for the help!

I'll get the plants settled in before I intro the fish-

I've looked all over for the pygmy chain sword plat and I can't get it locally any where. I can get it online but after shipping the cost is about $20 for 1 2-3 " plant. Thats too expensive for me to justify when it should cost around $5 or less if I could find it here. What else will worlk- having a hard time finding anything like that or the grass hair that will provide that grass like coverage- what else will work. I have listed above in a previous post the plants I already have- thanks in advance for the help!

The dwarf sagittaria is similar, though for me very slow growing.

There may be someone close enough to you to mail you some pygmy chain sword. Maybe post a new thread with your location.

Question

I got some more plants that I think will suffice to provide th coverage needed ( 1 crypt and 2 slow growing grass like plants).
Now as to the cpd themselves. When they are little and still growing- do they look like minnow- for example lacking in their adult coloration? The lfs I got the planys at showed me the ones they had and they were all babies ranging i size fron like 1/8 of an " to maybe 1/2". None of them resembled the adult ones I've seen so how do I know they are cpd? Also- at what age or size is it best to get these? When coloration is evident or not? Please help!

Stores often get fish when juveniles, since these are less expensive. Buying a group (think we were talking about 8-9 earlier?) will likely get a mix of male and female--hopefully. Juvenile fish usually do not have the intense colouration of the adult, and of course being stressed in the store tank makes them even paler.

Byron- we were talking 8 or 9 and yes these are definite babies. I will get these when the other fish store has them again and cross things- hoping for a male/female mix of the right ratio. Again-thaks so much for all your help!
