Bosemani Rainbow not looking too well

So this morning my gf told me that one of my bosemani rainbow fish we just got this past weekend was almost black with vertical bars down its side and wouldn't eat. I understand this this is probably because he is agitated but could it be from illness? I have been lucky and haven't lost a fish yet in my new aquarium and don't want to start with the most expensive one.

The other thing is this guy is only with 1 other rainbow. I know you are supposed to put them in a school but these two guys are the biggest fish in the tank and I figured they may feel less threatened and in need of schooling then say my neons. The smaller of the two is showing great color and doesn't seem to be agitated at all. So am I looking at an illness here or do I need to drop some money on a few more tank mates for them?

What size tank? What are your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings?

My rainbows are quick to change color when stressed. There are so many things that can cause a fish to change color. Illness or stress from not being kept in a group, are both a possibility. Is he still eating and acting healthy?

How long have you had him?

Hi Joe,

What Twistersmom said - post the water levels etc....

I can't help with the stripes but it does sound like stress as it happens like that in so many other fish.

I have two male B- rainbows in my 45 gallon community and they are thriving. They stay next to each other always. Hopefully, yours will do fine together but if you have room, you might want to add a few more.

If I had room, I'd get them at least two more buddies but it will have to wait until I can move them to a bigger tank.
