Smile barb tank

Hey folks!!! I finally got my 55 gallon yay. I am thinking of doing a barb tank. I have always wanted cherry barbs and the lfs near my folks got in black ruby barbs. Wondering if these guys would all get along? And if you could recommend some other type of barbs (that can be found at lfs) that could go along with them as well? I am gonna go check out the fish profiles to see what it says about these fish too. I was curious about rosy barbs but I believe they get bigger than the other two. using the aqadvisor site to see how many I can have of each without overstocking.

I still want cory cats of some sort and another pl*co. My albino pl*co at my moms died,my brown one is still alive I think. Sad,because my albino was a pretty fishy! Sigh. Anywho,I will be checking out the lfs near my folks and there is another one a bit south of where I live now that is good too.

Thanks!!!!

never bet on different species of barbs shoaling together, but if you get groups 5 and up of each i'm pretty sure most barbs are fine with each other..lol as long as you dont get a big school of tinfoil barbs or something XD.. i recommend platinum green tiger barbs.. they have a subtle but awesome green/purple iridecsence that can be easily overlooked in the store. they are excellent to watch.. but i'm sure you have an idea of that since you are starting a barb tank :)

There are a lot of really beautiful barbs. I'd try to keep them in the same basic size and temperament group. Rubies are really nice and peaceful. They would probably mix better with the Cherry Barbs than Tigers. Rosies are a bit boisterous, so I might pass on them.

I love the coloration of checker barbs, not sure if you considered those. I have had my rosy barbs for years and I enjoy them. They are very boisterous, but fun. They eat from my fingers and are pretty personable for small tropical fish.
I found some lovely rosy ones at the LFS. If you decide on them I would suggest looking at a quality shop first. I also bought a few at a commercial pets store, and was a little disappointed with their coloration. They are very hardy fish so would make nice starting fish in a tank. I think some people undervalue rosy, but they are fun.

I agree on all counts.

I like the combination of gold and cherry barbs. Some gold barbs get rather large (by comparison), but they will do just fine and a 55 is sufficiently large. Both would do well with the black ruby barbs.

125 - BGK, chanchito cichlid, pictus cats, silver dollars, palmas bichir
125 - cichlids (severums, bolivian rams, chocolate), rainbows ( turquoise, red), loaches (angelicus, zebra, kuhli and horseface), plecos (BN, RL and clown), denison barbs, tiretrack eel, pearl gouramis, betta
90 - Congo tetras, african knife, upside down cats, spotted ctenopoma, kribensis, delhezzi bichir
2.5 - betta

Whats the very best combination of barbs? Rubies and cherries?
Why are silver tips something to watch out for?
Would tigers want an open space to swim, with sides of plants?

The best combination will be dependent on a number of factors. Like was said, there are peaceful species, and there are aggressive species. Mixing peaceful and aggressive species (barbs or not) is not a good stocking plan.
