I have an empty 55 gallon aquarium and thought about getting a Bala Shark. Is the 55 gallon too small? If so, is there another species that doesn't get as big, but with the similar shark look?
Balas will outgrow a 55 gallon. It will work temporarily but they grow to about 14" and also should be in groups. I have 5 in my 150 gallon. They range in size from about 7" to 10". They are also very active swimmers. So a 6 foot tank would be best. As an alternative, take a look at Dennison barbs (a k.a. roseline shark, torpedo barb). They are very beautiful and grow to about 5-6". They also should be kept in groups but would be better suited to your 55 gallon. I have 6 and they are one of my favorites. Here's some pics of my balas and dennisons.
A 55 gal is too small long term. You could go with Pearl Gouramis and they are beautiful. Several types of rainbows would look off the charts.
