Angry who the heck ate my xenia??

i have in my 14g cube:

2 snowflake clowns
1 fighting conch
2 peppermint shrimp
1 cleaner shrimp
1 tuxedo sea urchin
1 starfish
1 brittle star
1 clam
6 very small hermit crabs

i put a pulsing xenia frag in my tank about 10 days ago. it looked fine this morning, pulsing away in the gentle current. i come home from work and it's all but gone. now when i bought this, i told the store clerk everything i had. he said no problem. i see a problem. whose fault is it? :(

Now you know why I don't like hermits

well, i guess i'll just take the hermits back to the store and shove them up his nostrils.

ok, that wouldn't be very nice for the hermits. i'll leave them in the small tank once i get the big(ger) tank set up.

is it only certain corals that hermits can bother? i have seen them all over my pile of polyps and they haven't seemed to bother it in the least. i never see them on my clam, thank heaven!

on a funny note, my urchin was playing rodeo with my conch last night. he was happily riding around on its back when all of a sudden, the conch bucked and threw him off. he rolled about 4", i heard him go "harumffff!" and then he started on his way up the front glass.

Well, take this to heart first, they would have only busted the coral up, 1 if they didn't have anything else to eat, and 2 if they were the meat eating variety of Hermits.

they were sold to me as blue leg hermits. to be honest, they are too small to detect any coloring. they have plenty to eat, as far as i can tell. they scavenge all over the rocks and they are growing so i assume they are eating.

if it wasn't them, could it have been any of my other inhabitants? i've been watching the xenia closely as i know they can be finicky but i have seen absolutely no signs of it melting away.

You would notice it melting. Hermits are the only ones on that list that pop out at me.

looks like you nailed it. i caught one of the little boogers crawling around on what's left of the xenia. next time i go to that place to pick up fish food, i'm gonna let them know that i'll be ordering all of my future livestock online since they can't seem to steer me in the right direction. grrr!

Ugh! I have pulsating Xenia and have hermit crabs. I've not had a problem. Hope I don't! I also have an emerald crab and 2 red crabs. I love my Xenia!
