starfish not doing well?

this is making me really sad. i had a friend send me a whole bunch of stuff, mostly inverts and live rock, several weeks ago. i knew i was getting something but i expected only a few little things. i was aghast when i opened the huge styro cooler and found at least a dozen bags of *stuff*! now, my tank had just finished cycling and was ready for stocking HOWEVER, i think he thought i had a 40g instead of a 14g. he included a gorgeous red starfish. i am pretty sure the poor thing is starving, it seems to be getting smaller and smaller and is very inactive.

i have called the only two places within 100 miles of me and neither will take him. they both say he will starve in their tanks.

i don't know what to do. i abhor the idea of him dying slowly. i really need some advice as to what i should do.

these starfish are more difficult to feed, and target feeding rarely works, just make sure the rocks dont stay too clean so there is plenty of potential food items for it to try. from my internet search just now I dont think anyone is 100% sure what most of these starfish eat, but linkia/fromias types are reported to feed on algae/detritis/bacteria/sponges, thinking even these reports may be guess work though.

Sorry I couldnt be of further help :/ GL with your starfish i hope he pulls through
