are sponges bad

i had bought a piece of live rock a long time ago and it had a loose piece on it so i left it like that. the other day the piece had fallen off and it looks like it has a sponge on it. are they harmful to the tank or any of its inhabitants

Sponges are actually great for a tank. They are awesome filter feeders that can move amazing amounts of water in an hour. Only drawback is that profilic amounts of sponges can be a sign of high phosphates.
