snails and starfish

a really stupid question, but I am going to start a marine tank soon, I have some ideas from the LFS but was just wondering, can you take a star from the ocean and keep it in your tank? I live with the atlantic ocean in my backyard (on a rocky beach) and there are always starfish and snails washing up on the rocks. just thought it might be neat to have one of them.
thanks

es it is entirely possible and a great idea, to keep a "natural" aquarium full of local inhabitants. There is a user here from Australia that does just that. I know several freshwater people near me that only keep local fish and plants in natural environment tanks.

Do keep in mind your local collecting restrictions. Never get caught with anything that could land you in jail. Around here we collect all kinds of fish and shrimps from the Gulf, we buy fishing licenses and salt stamps so that we are just on this side of the law. You never know.

Thanks! could you keep these starfish that come right out of the ocean with fish from the fishstore? I am located in Nefoundland, Canada, and I fear the species I would have available naturally are far less interesting then those in Australia

A lot of marine fish sold came from the wild. Why? Not many marine fish are eager to breed in captivity. As long as the fish that you are keeping do not relish on invertebrates, then you should be okay.

Welcome to Fishforum.com by the way.

Just keep in mind that some stars will eat fish and or any corals you place within the confines.
