they're too quick for my hands lol. I'm wandering now if it is a mantis.. I saw a hermit crawl right over one last nigth and it didn't even try to go for the hermit *shrug*.. I really wander what they are eating, between my corals and fish no food gets by lol.

That's interesting. I hope you can snag a pic of it so we can properly ID, but if your crab is ok... how big is the crab? They love those guys... check this one out! Mr Mantis

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea...

The hermit was about twice the size of the mantis.. but even then I don't see why it didn't go for it! I will try to get a pic, but I doubt I can. My camera won't focus on the aquarium with high zoom, and with it only coming out at night that makes it even harder... =/

I had a mantis hitch hike inside a LR. When the lights went out you could hear loud clicking noises as he carved out rock. I'd find cracked open hermit crab shells in the morning. This one was about 2 1/2" and was eating blue leg hermits and astrea snails. One warning: a popular nickname for mantis is 'thumb splitter' so I wouldn't be just grabbing it.

As for removal...get a bucket with about 15% water from your tank and the rest fresh water. Match temperature and PH to your tank. This freshwater bath won't hurt your zoas or mushrooms, but the mantis will immediately hate the salinity change. Dunk the rock for 10-15 seconds and the mantis will probably get out of it. Put the rock back in your tank and you have the mantis in the bucket.

I'm still baffled a bit by this. Some days I swear they are amphipods.. but I spotted the two largest ones again today, and they are black now and have buried into the substrate!! The front mandibles look very much like a smasher mantis... I'm hoping I'm wrong about this. I would love to get a pic for you guys, but my camera was stolen out of my car a couple weeks ago .. =/. Anyhow.. think of something just like an amphipod, with two huge attachments dangling (slightly larger than its head section). each un-id'ed thing being about the same size I mentioned earlier. ~1" long and 1/4" thick but black now.

Is your tank acrylic, glass or tempered glass?
