I will have a 40G breeder. I would like to keep softies and an anemone. How many watts of CF lighting would I need?

totally depends on what your keeping, cf lighting would be a mistake, spectrum shifts very quickly and will lead to algae issues, cf will limit an anemone choice by 99% ie maybe a rock or flower anem, seriously look at T5ho, 4 bulb minimum, 6 would be perfect, and on the anem? most people say 6months to a year of stable tank conditions before attempting an anemone, I disagree with that and will add that it takes 6 m to a year for the tank keeper to become stable lol

its more about the color temp than watts in salt water from wha ti have been told.... for example 6500K will give great growth but awful color
10000K will give a bit more color and ok growth
20000K will give your great color and very little growth
so its really what you want out of the light and also how "blue" you want the tank to look 6500K is very bright and yellow 20000 is more white and blue
hope this helps some

the 300 watt would work, depending on the type of bulb. just watch your temps with only a 40 breeder and such a hot light. watts, or even more importantly the PAR rating of the light is what counts. for example you couldnt have a 10w 6500K bulb and expect great coral growth, if any at all.
