leather coral possibly dieing?

2 weeks ago i bought a rock with 5 leather corals on it. unfortinally i dont have a camera to show ya a pic but i can best describe it as tan and look kinda like mushrooms but much stiffer. today i was doing some cleaning and noticed that part of one is falling apart from the rest literly lifting off the rock and leaveing behind there little teeth looking things where it was. now if herd these corals will sometimes drop sections in the wild to reproduce but its uncommon in the tank could this be what is happening? its only holding onto where it was by a small portion now and the area where the break is looks kinda nasty. would it hurt to just cut it off and use a razor to clean up the nasty looking part?

I am a fellow newbie but have leathers. They can split when they get moody and shed their skin and a mucus like substance. I read that a high water flow can help it along. But could do with a more experienced reefer to comment
