There really is not an optimul place to place a heater that I have heard of. I put mine as close to the filter intake as possible so that the heated water gets circulated the best it can, IMO.

If I ever have large enough tanks to require Canisters filters I will use inline heaters just for that reason.

There is an optimal placement for the heater, but it varies from tank to tank. The heater should be placed in an area of good water flow.

thanx, i will move the heater. the reason for placing it in the tank is because the temp varies from hot in the day to very cool in the night. that is a recipe for ich. so what is the best temp to put it on?

You could set temp. at 80 degrees and then check your themometer at warmest part of the day. If it is not too much above your setting, you should then be ok during evening as well. :D
