Would really like to get into cichlids...

Hello there!

I have had livebearers, and I'm feeling about "done" with my old faithful danios. I would really like to get into cichlids.

My tank is 25 gallons, fully cycled, with a sword, water wistera (6 plants) and a moss ball. My tank is somewhere between 7.5 and 8.0 pH. Nitrates are not a problem.

Current inhabitants are a molly (who's on his last legs, he's an old fish) a peaceful dwarf gourami, six harlequin rasboras, four old zebra danios (Had them since November), and three small male guppies. Oh, and a striped mystery snail.

Would a pair of rams be a realistic option for my aquarium? I've read that they're a peaceful fish. Or can you reccomend a more suitable species?

Of the two Ram species, Mikrogeophagus altispinosus (Bolivian Ram) will probably be better in your setup. The other, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi is very fussy about water conditions (parameters and stability), although if commercially raised in harder water might be OK. The Bolivian is hardier though.

Have a look at the profiles, click on the shaded names. As it mentions there, it is not easy to sex the Bolivian, and 2 males in a 25g will be constantly at each other.
