For my cichlid tank, I just went to my local rock yard and picked up some river slate, 18 bucks filled my 55g with more than enough flatrock to be sufficient for rockworks. Most rocks you come upon will be safe as long as they're cleaned properly

i get mine from my backyard we have all kinds of rocks from lake superorior and other places like that. like stated before slate is a good choice and some small boulders you can make an appertment style rockwork my cichlids love it! but when you do this make sure your rock is against the glass and not ontop of the substrate because if they start digging your rocks could fall on them and kill them. (learned from experience) luckly nobody died tho.
