What type of Cichlid?

Me and my husband bought this fish as one of our first cichlids. He used to look NOTHING like this picture when he was younger. I do not remember what the guy who sold him to us said he was. Nor do I even remember where I got him, I thought it was Wal-Mart but ... Anyways, we bought a red tailed shovel nose hybrid catfish, which we had no idea what we were getting at that time either. LOL! Needless to say, we woke up one morning to find that our catfish had eaten 50 bucks worth of fish! I was pretty angry at the time, gotta kinda laugh now since we were so stupid! But this guy and a couple others were left. I really want to find out what type he is since he has grown to be one of our FAVORITE fish! I love this guy!

Just curious about what someone else thinks ....

***And for those who don't already know, KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING! .. LOL ... ***

I am having a hard time with this picture. I want to say it's this or that, but I just can't put a finger on it. Are you sure it's not a hybrid of some sort? Did the lable say mixed african cichlid or did it have a specific name?
Hopefully someone else can say what it is.
And being a cichlid few fish will be able to out bully him.

Well I thought perhaps it was some kind of peacock, but all those I have looked at do not look exactly like him they look similar. But he also looks like a Venustus male a little too. I am just as confused as you are! I am thinking he was just in a tank with other cichlids labeled African Cichlids! So maybe someone else can help us out. I know it is really frustrating. I just bought a Venustus female I guess I could put them in the tank together once she gets bigger and see if they will breed, maybe that will answer my question! LOL ....

there is no way that is a venustus. it is defintely a peacock of some description. problem is peacocks are notorius cross breeder with other types of peacocks. only thing i could suggest is maybe googling peacocks and looking through all the images or getting some ad konnings books.

Ya know he reminds me of an OB peacock mixed with an electric blue peacock.... just a wild guess though.
