Timid Convicts

I have had a breeding pair of convicts for a little over a year now. They started out with 2 others which died after I got home from college. Then they stayed by themselves all summer in a 20 gallon, and when I got back from my internship, they got upgraded to a 30 gallon. Which is where the trouble started. They just stayed in their caves all day. So then I added some cories into their tank b/c food was just settling on the bottom and wreaking havoc on the water quality. Still, they stay in their caves. Then I added some danios as dithers, and they started to come out a little. But then they bred, I took out the babies, and now they have just been sitting in their cave (now a big castle). Every tank they've been in has been sandy with lots of rocks and caves and somewhat densely planted. What else can I do??

How long have they been in the 30g exactly? If they were introduced to the new tank, like all fish, they do shy away first as they are trying to adapt to their new environment. Get rid of your cories before they end up beaten badly by your cons.

I'm ready for the pressure.
The drama and the pleasure!
If there is one thing I want to see here, it's HUMOR.
I believe I can fly!
I believe I can touch the sky!
I think about it every night and day!
I stand in awe of my body.

Lupin is right most cichlids (there are a few exceptions) would beat the hell out of Corydorus. If you have another tank put the corys in that.

A good replacement for the corys would be a Bristle Nose Pleco or some other type of pleco that is about the same sive as the convicts, they are better armoured to protect themselves against your Convicts. Scavengers should be selected by the type of fish that you keep with them.
