Thinking of doing a Cichlid tank

Hello I am thinking of doing the Cichlid 30 gallon tank. What kind would be best for this size tank? How many and if any tank mates?

I want beautiful colored cichlids...trying to narrow it down so I can start on setting up tank.

I'm still fairly new to fish keeping but I know your gonna be asked for a lot more info on your water as this will help to determine what cichlids you're
better keeping. I have a south american cichlid tank, but if you want lots of colour I think you'll want to go for Africans. But the people on here will be great at getting you started.

Thanks! I want to determine a cichlid - like a centerpeice then create the tank around that fish. I have not started anything yet. Wanted feedback on a cool awesome fish then I will create the perfect home.

Which way you go is totally dependent on your water. Soft neutral to acidic go South American, hard and alkaline go African.

Here is a link to suggested setups for various cichlids, whether African or South American

Honestly.. a 29g isn't a good tank at all for any cichlids. You have very few options. You will likely end up with a one fish tank.

As mentioned above though, would need your water hardness and PH before any possibilities could be offered.

Actually, there are quite a few options. Some of the South American dwarf cichlids can do well in pairs or small harems (depending on species needs) in a 24" tank., as well as a select few rift lake cichlids in small harems. The ones that would work would be are between 2" and 3.5". For example:

a breeding pair of Laetacara dorsigera
a breeding pair of Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
a small harem (3 fish) of Haplochromis sp. "ruby"
a harem (5 fish) ofJulidochromis ornatus

Think of all the Apistos! I, myself, am planning a 25g with a pair of Red Breasted Acara. But you're right, its all conjecture until we get water parameters. I love the planning stage, its so exciting!
