Texas Cichlid Question

I have a Texas Cichlid I've had 3 years and the guy who gave him to me said he had him 2 or 3 years. So i figure him to be 5 or 6 years old, he's aprox 12 to14 inches long, in a 55 gal tank. I have 2 outside ponds, 1 is 700 gal and the other is 500 gal. The larger one waterfalls into the smaller one, and currently there are approx 40to 50 gold fish in each.
My question is, since Texas Cichlids are native to the Rio Grand river, could I move "Mister" out side, and give him more space, would he be OK. I know he would eat the smaller gold fish, and crowd controll could be a good thing. I am worried about the winter time. Would I need to bring him back inside. The 55 is the largest tank I have and he is a little cramped in there now. I really do like him and want him to be happy. Looking for opinions - Sue

I would say he would be okay during warm months. The fish has been raised in a tank at a certain temp so he wont be used to the colder water. Also a 700 gallon pond will have temp flux a lot more than a river so your pond will get a lot colder than the rivers. Also i would still feed the texas when in the pond, dont let it just feed on the fish.
