Is this a terrible idea?

Would it be a really bad idea to keep a breeding pair of BGJD's in a 40 gallon breeder by themselves? I do have a 140(48x26x26) that they could go in but I was hoping that I could try them in the 40 gallon breeder first. In the 140 they won't be alone and I really don't want them being bothered, or bothering my other fish in the 140. It will also be easier to get the fry out of the 40 and into their own grow out tank. Do you think it's one of those things that I could try with them, and if it doesn't work out just put them in the 140? They both seem to be fairly laid back and have never been really aggressive towards each other.

So, bad idea or it might work?

just to clarify.. what exactly is a BGJD? Also you mention growout tanks for the fry, how many and what sizes are these?

A BGJD is a blue gene jack dempsey. I have 2 20L tanks for grow outs. I also have a 10 but it is not set up.

20L as in 20 litres/5gallons? Thats not really big enough for JD fry. With the possibility of having 30+ at a time those are going to be very full tanks right from the start. With what you have available right now I would not allow the JD's to breed.

As to keeping them in the 140, I'm not sure what you have in there at the moment but it's very likely the JD"s will kill it once they start to spawn.

Ahh ok. Do you have plans for the fry once they get big enough? It doesn't take long for them to get to 4" or so.

Although... sometimes they dont take up much space.

Yes, about 3-4 of my lfs are interested in the EB fry. I'll sell some of the other fry but they will probably end up being food.

Ill take some if you can ship them 40 Gals should be plenty I breed my Jacks in 30. that way they are not chasing and picking up fry all over I think this stresses them less.

40 is a bit too small for these fish. I wouldn't breed them in anything less than a 4ft 55 gallons and that may be tight depending on how big they get. Jacks typically top out at 10" but they can get 12". That being said I have heard that because of the genetic instability of EBJD BGJD tend to be smaller. You could try it for now but I would look for a larger home in the future.

"responsible fish keeper?... Didn't know there was any other kind"

I am not retarded I just can't spell
