tankmate suggestions for severum

Hi all,
I currently have a Green Severum along with a chocolate pleco in my 20 gallon tank. I will be moving them both soon to a 55 gallon tank I've purchased (as soon as I find a stand). The Severum is about 3" and the pleco about 2-1/2". Once I get my 55 gallon up and running I'd like to base the tank around the Severum and keep mostly South American Cichlids. I'm looking for ideas for suitable tankmates. I was thinking of getting another Severum and maybe a Firemouth. I like keyholes but they are pretty hit and miss when it comes to availablility at my lfs. Any ideas for what I else can add. How many?

What about dither fish. What would be good to use...Rainbow fish? or maybe Giant Danios? Would this work.

I need some ideas.

Thanks!

Oh, by the way I will be using a gravel substrate and fake plants. I have some rocks and some ornaments for hiding places.

Melanotaenia praecox will work for the mid level and giant danios for the surface.

Thanks for the response Lupin.

How many of each would be ok? Both of these get to about 3" each, don't they?

Alot of people keep Sev's and think they KNOW everything there is to know about them. Sevs are quite docile creatures and can reach quite a size. I would stick to your 2 Sevs and plec in a 55g. :D

The praecox does not exceed over 3 inches. A group of 6 is okay. Giant danios can reach 4 inches. Keep 5 as the minimum number.

I, by no means, am any expert LOL! I still feel like a noob even though I've had this tank for about 10 years. There is so much to learn and I'm glad I discovered this forum. It's great to have so many different views and ideas.

It's just that the one sev I have is very shy and seems lonely (even with the plec). He/she spends a lot of time hiding behind a rock. I had heard about "dither" fish to make timid fish feel more comfortable to come out and swim. Is this correct?

Will a firemouth get along with him/her (not sure of sex) or should I just get another severum? I thought maybe a slightly smaller fish would be a easier load on the 55 gal tank.

I would add another sev. A lot of us keep them in pairs.:) Unless you ended up with two males, chances are your two sevs will coexist peacefully with occasional liplocking and pecking.

Dither fish like giant danios are fine.

IME severums make great single 'wet pets' and are full of personality. If you want SA cichlids, then firemouth is not (it's Central American).

I think a group of about 5 or 6 Bolivian rams would work well, with a shoal of about 15 of a deep bodied tetra species such as bleeding heart tetra.

You would see some interesting social behaviour with the Bolivians as well as the personality of your severum.

This is my suggestion if you want a South American theme, decorated with bogwood and (sturdy) plants.

Conor, thanks for the suggestions. I actually did consider the Bolivia Rams and am still very interested in them. But I actually went a different route. I picked up a couple of Boesemani Rainbowfish. And I am also planning on getting a small school of the Praecox Rainbowfish. They are very colorful fish and a lot of fun to watch. So far my sev has had no problem with the Boesemanis.

I have 3 green severums in my 30 (just until the 110 gal is ready to rock) along with 2 blue gourami, 7 glowlight tetras, and 4 cory cats.. oooh and 1 pleco. they get along just splended with everything, although they are avid eaters. i usually have to trick the severums to one side of the tank so my tetras can eat too, but even then they are never agressive, except to each other on rare occasion.
