Mixed African tanks at pet stores are dangerous unless you know exactly what you are looking at. And so many look very similar. With Africans, I personally would advise buying them through a breeder or a reputable online supplier - then you know what you are getting, and you can get them at once. Putting them all in at once makes sure there are no definate territories already, so you won't have to change the rock completely every time you get a new group - which doesn't always work anyway. I have had fish shipped quite often, and always successfully. The other option is to get a good LFS to order what you want. Just make sure your tank is cycled and stable, of course! :) If you can seed it, it will probably take 4 weeks to do a fishless cycle. Read the stickys we have here, and you'll be good to go!
